Here At Mission Control......And Some Random Musings

I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that, although I can't see anything on my screen, my computer is still working. The bad news is that, since it's a laptop, I can't easily swap out screens. The good news is that Purple Hoodie Chick let me borrow the monitor from her desktop computer (and thanks to my son who set it all up for me). The bad news is that some functions (picture files, data files, links, etc.) show up on the laptop monitor and have to be dragged onto the secondary monitor. More bad news, I can't see them well enough to click and drag! So, for the time being, it looks like NASA Mission Control around here with multiple monitors and cords all over the place, but at least I can still access my blog. I just won't be able to post pictures or clickable links for a while. I had planned to start giving you a peek at our yard projects, but without pictures, it won't be as much fun so I'll save it for another day.

Instead, let's talk about some random things I've been wondering about.
  • Why do some stores and restaurants have their phone number posted on their sign or above their entrance? If you can see the phone number, aren't you close enough to go in and ask your question or place your order? And if you're thinking it might be nice to call and place your carry out order later, can you really save the phone number to your cell phone while driving by at 40+ miles per hour?
  • Why do they post a sign saying "Bump" next to a large bump in the road? When you add up the cost of the sign, the post and the manpower to install it, wouldn't it be more cost effective to fix the bump?
  • How often do condiment containers in restaurants get cleaned?
  • Why do they ask you where you'll be going and what you'll be doing when you cross the border into Canada? Do I have to have a purpose or can I just come over and look around? And really, if I were there to commit a crime, would I tell the border agents?
  • Why are there instructions on shampoo bottles? Does anyone actually need instructions to wash their hair?
  • Why will my vacuum cleaner suck the fringe right off my rugs but it won't pick up crumbs in my kitchen?

Just wondering!

: ) fun questions... as far as condiments. I have worked in LOTS of restaurants in my day and any that I actually wanted to eat in had a cleaning of random stuff(like salt and pepper shakers, condiments containers,& such) schedule for the servers to do daily, and condiments were done once a week... not all the places... but all the ones where I would want to eat! ; )
I'm glad you have functionality, even though it's not all you want... I look forward to seeing your photos, when things get fixed... can it get fixed?

Sorry about all the computer trouble, hope it gets worked out soon! Love the last one, my vac is the same way! Jeez :)
Good questions, I have one that irks me: why, when calling any large company for help (say, the utilities company, for example) do I have to go through a long automated system saying what my problem is to a voice-activated computer or punching in "Press 1 for---", just to have the person who finally picks up ask me why I am calling? Why did I waste 5 minutes wandering through the system inputing information if it's not showing up in front of them?

Skip Breakfast And Have An Adventure

We're skipping breakfast again.  I know you were expecting Mr. Willoughby to dazzle you with his cooking skills, but he doesn't feel like cooking today.  He wants to go skydiving. Yesterday, a friend sent us a link to an article about a new place to skydive in Michigan.  When I clicked on the link, I was surprised to see a familiar face. We'll get to that in a minute. You may recall that Mr. W started skydiving by taking a tandem jump a few years ago.  With a tandem jump, having a great instructor makes the difference between a fun experience and an amazing experience and Mr. W had Josh Sheppard; one of the best.  Josh is experienced, enthusiastic and passionate about skydiving.  Mr. W had such an amazing experience that he decided to take the AFF course (to learn to jump solo) before they were back on the ground.   So back to that article, the familiar face I saw was Josh.  He and his brother Abe have started a new skydiving business in Owo...

Timeline

I made Spaghetti with Tomato Basil Cream Sauce and Chicken Parmesan for dinner last night. It's not a difficult meal to prepare, but it does require the oven and multiple burners on the cooktop so it heats up the kitchen. After dinner, it was still awfully warm inside, so I left all of the dishes right where there were and my husband and I went outside to sit on the back porch and cool off. We had eaten rather late, so it was already dark outside. Our neighborhood was uncharacteristically quiet and the only sounds were that of the crickets chirping and the faint whoosh of cars passing by on Main Street. It was a perfect summer evening, the sort that you dream about in the middle of February. I asked my husband what he thought we might have been doing at that exact moment one year ago. Had we been sitting in the same place enjoying similarly beautiful weather? Had I made the same meal for dinner? What about five years ago? How about 10, 15, and 20 years ago? I know I've taken a ...

Public Service Announcement

I'm not quite ready to come back yet, but I wanted to take a few minutes to post my version of a Public Service Announcement.  As many of you already know, I've been away from blogging due to illness.  However, what you may not know is that the illness is H1N1.  Yep, the Swine Flu. I can honestly say that I've never felt so terrible in my life.  I had heard that for most people, H1N1 is no worse than the regular seasonal flu.  I guess I'm not most people.  After 15 days, I'm only now beginning to feel slightly human.  I was unable to get vaccinated because our area ran out of vaccine months ago.  I understand that it has recently become available again, but it's too late for me.  It's not too late for you, though.  If the vaccine is available in your area and you haven't gotten it yet, I beg you to drop what you're doing and take your family to get vaccinated. If you ignore my advice and decide to develop your immunity by gettin...
