Passion In The Kitchen

Kitchen tools are awesome, aren't they? Can you ever have too many? I guess you could say that you have too many if you don't have room for all of them. I would rather just say my kitchen needs to be bigger! I love accessories and gadgets of all sorts and have a serious passion for buying them. I can honestly say that I do use most of the ones I own. Yes, I said most. I've purchased a dud or two, but I really do love to use the things I have.

This is one of my favorites. It's a straight blade pizza knife, but it's good for so much more than pizza. It's great for cutting bar cookies and other square treats and getting them all the same size. It's not something I use on a daily basis, but when I need it, it's great to have. I made cereal bars today and it was so much easier to cut them into squares using this knife than a regular knife.

I'm also very fond of the kitchen items I've inherited and the vintage items I've collected. These green glass dessert plates belonged to my great grandmother. They're fairly fragile, but I try to use them as often as I can anyway. I would much rather use the things that I love than have them sitting in a cabinet unappreciated.

It just wouldn't be the same to toss a handful of nuts into the food processor. I love to use the hand cranked nut grinder, or enlist one of my kids to do the job for me. It's only drawback is that you can't adjust the size of the grind. But for finely chopped or ground nuts, it's my first choice. My mom has one just like it and so did my grandma. I bought this one at an antique show. It got quite a workout this past Christmas.

This is a handy vintage gadget, too, and it's another antique show purchase. Do you know what it is? It's a jar opener. The gears allow it to automatically adjust to the size of the jar lid. There are little "grabbers" that grip the edge of the lid and the handle gives you extra leverage. I've yet to encounter a jar I couldn't open with this little guy.

I could go on and on and on........

I have to stay out of kitchen stores for that reason, I want to buy every gadget I see! I love, love, love the green plates, & the pizza slicer is now at the top of my need list! :)

I love kitchen gadgets too! I cannot afford many things right now, but one of my dreams is having a fully equipped kitchen one day! The green dishes are awesome. The vintage pieces also add quite a touch.

Lissaloo - thanks, I love the green plates, too. I got the pizza slicer at Cooking.com years ago for around $20, but they don't carry this one anymore. The new ones are close to $45!! Seems like a lot for something you don't use every day. I found one here for about $17, though (I love window shopping at restaurant supply stores). http://www.webstaurantstore.com/third1076/products/pizza-cutters.html

Gracey - You'll have so much fun when you do buy all the things you want for your kitchen! I think buying the vintage pieces is even more fun than buying new ones because they're so much more unique!

Skip Breakfast And Have An Adventure

We're skipping breakfast again.  I know you were expecting Mr. Willoughby to dazzle you with his cooking skills, but he doesn't feel like cooking today.  He wants to go skydiving. Yesterday, a friend sent us a link to an article about a new place to skydive in Michigan.  When I clicked on the link, I was surprised to see a familiar face. We'll get to that in a minute. You may recall that Mr. W started skydiving by taking a tandem jump a few years ago.  With a tandem jump, having a great instructor makes the difference between a fun experience and an amazing experience and Mr. W had Josh Sheppard; one of the best.  Josh is experienced, enthusiastic and passionate about skydiving.  Mr. W had such an amazing experience that he decided to take the AFF course (to learn to jump solo) before they were back on the ground.   So back to that article, the familiar face I saw was Josh.  He and his brother Abe have started a new skydiving business in Owo...

Timeline

I made Spaghetti with Tomato Basil Cream Sauce and Chicken Parmesan for dinner last night. It's not a difficult meal to prepare, but it does require the oven and multiple burners on the cooktop so it heats up the kitchen. After dinner, it was still awfully warm inside, so I left all of the dishes right where there were and my husband and I went outside to sit on the back porch and cool off. We had eaten rather late, so it was already dark outside. Our neighborhood was uncharacteristically quiet and the only sounds were that of the crickets chirping and the faint whoosh of cars passing by on Main Street. It was a perfect summer evening, the sort that you dream about in the middle of February. I asked my husband what he thought we might have been doing at that exact moment one year ago. Had we been sitting in the same place enjoying similarly beautiful weather? Had I made the same meal for dinner? What about five years ago? How about 10, 15, and 20 years ago? I know I've taken a ...

Public Service Announcement

I'm not quite ready to come back yet, but I wanted to take a few minutes to post my version of a Public Service Announcement.  As many of you already know, I've been away from blogging due to illness.  However, what you may not know is that the illness is H1N1.  Yep, the Swine Flu. I can honestly say that I've never felt so terrible in my life.  I had heard that for most people, H1N1 is no worse than the regular seasonal flu.  I guess I'm not most people.  After 15 days, I'm only now beginning to feel slightly human.  I was unable to get vaccinated because our area ran out of vaccine months ago.  I understand that it has recently become available again, but it's too late for me.  It's not too late for you, though.  If the vaccine is available in your area and you haven't gotten it yet, I beg you to drop what you're doing and take your family to get vaccinated. If you ignore my advice and decide to develop your immunity by gettin...
